History

Mathis Funeral Home has been serving Dexter and Bernie area families for years. We are honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

Opened in the 1930’s under the name of Blankenship-Strickland Funeral Home, until 1950 when Ray and Lucille Rainey purchased Mr. Blankenship’s part in the business. The Funeral home became Strickland-Rainey Funeral Home. A few years later the Rainey’s purchased Mr. Strickland’s part and it became Rainey Funeral Home. During the next four decades Mr. and Mrs. Rainey would develop a first class Funeral Home while putting the families they served first. Mr. and Mrs. Rainey were very active in their community, Lucille taught first grade and Ray was a Chamber of Commerce president and was also the Stoddard County Coroner for four decades. Lucille lost her battle to cancer in 1994 shortly after in 1996 Ray passed away also due to cancer.

After Ray’s passing Greg and Lisa Mathis purchased the Funeral Home. Greg had worked for the Rainey’s since 1978 after he graduated from Mid-America Mortuary School in Louisville, Kentucky. Greg has been very involved in his community he has served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club President, voted Dexter’s Man of The Year in 1998, an Athletic Supporter of the Dexter Bearcats, Stoddard County Coroner for seven years and he served four terms as Stoddard County Presiding Commissioner.

Greg and Lisa have two children, Eric and Aaron. Many of you will remember Eric from playing the piano at local Churches. Eric is associate pastor at The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, DC.

Aaron and his wife, Brittany live in Dexter with their daughters, Taylor and Harper Anne and their son, Blake Gregory. Aaron works with his parents at the Funeral Home and also serves as the President of the Regional Healthcare Foundation and the Secretary of the Dexter Lions Club. Aaron is also the announcer for Dexter Bearcat Football and Varsity Boys Basketball Games. Aaron’s wife Brittany is a registered nurse, but has taken time off to stay at home and raise their children. Aaron and Brittany teach a children’s Sunday School class at First Baptist Church.

Greg and Lisa are committed to providing the same care and professionalism the Mathis name has been known for in Stoddard County.
